Is a 7.5m EV charging cable a good length for public charging?

Yes. 7.5 metres is a particularly useful length if you regularly use public, workplace or destination AC chargers.

Unlike charging at home, you can't always control where the charging point is positioned relative to your car. The socket may be behind the vehicle, beside another bay, beyond a kerb or on the opposite side from your EV's charging port.

A 7.5m cable provides considerably more flexibility than a 5m cable without the additional size and weight of a 10m or 15m three-phase cable.

That makes 7.5m a strong middle-ground choice for drivers who charge in multiple locations rather than always using the same wallbox and parking position. The product is specifically designed for home, workplace and public charging use.

My EV only charges at 11kW - can I use a 22kW charging cable?

Yes.

This 22kW cable is rated for 32A three-phase charging, but it is fully compatible with vehicles and charge points operating at 11kW (16A three-phase).

If your EV's onboard AC charger has an 11kW maximum, connecting it with this cable to a suitable charge point will simply result in the vehicle charging at up to 11kW. The 22kW rating is the cable's maximum capability - it does not force 22kW into the vehicle.

The cable also works with compatible single-phase charging up to around 7.4kW, making it useful across different charging locations.

Should I buy a 5m or 7.5m 22kW Type 2 cable?

Choose 5m if it comfortably reaches your EV in the places where you normally charge. A shorter three-phase cable is naturally easier to carry and store.

Choose 7.5m if you regularly encounter different parking arrangements, use public or workplace chargers, have an offset home wallbox, or simply find 5m leaves too little margin.

The extra 2.5 metres can be particularly valuable with different EVs, because Type 2 charging ports aren't always located in the same position on the vehicle.

If 5m would only just reach, 7.5m is the more practical choice. You should be able to connect without pulling the cable tight or placing unnecessary strain on the vehicle or charge-point socket.

Is a 22kW Type 2 cable worth buying if I don't currently have 22kW charging?

It can be, particularly if you want one cable that works across a wide range of AC charging speeds.

This cable supports 22kW 32A three-phase, 11kW 16A three-phase and compatible single-phase charging up to around 7.4kW.

So even if your current EV only accepts 7kW or 11kW AC, the cable can continue to be used if you later change to a vehicle capable of faster three-phase AC charging.

The trade-off is that a 22kW three-phase cable is larger and heavier than an equivalent single-phase cable because it contains the additional conductors required for three-phase charging. If you know you'll only ever require single-phase charging, a 7kW cable may therefore be easier to handle.
