Do I need a 3-phase EV charging cable for my car?

You need a 3-phase cable to take advantage of 11kW or 22kW AC charging, but whether your car can actually use those speeds depends on its onboard AC charger.

This cable supports 32A three-phase charging up to 22kW, as well as 11kW three-phase and compatible single-phase charging up to around 7.4kW.

If your EV only supports 7kW single-phase AC charging, this cable will still work, but it will not make the vehicle charge faster. If your EV supports 11kW or 22kW AC, a three-phase cable allows it to make use of those higher charging rates when connected to a suitable charge point.

Can I use this 22kW 3-phase cable with my 7kW home charger?

Yes.

A 22kW Type 2 cable does not require a 22kW charge point. This cable can also be used with compatible single-phase home wallboxes, where it simply draws the power available from one phase.

So you could use the same cable with a 7kW home charger during the week and an 11kW or 22kW workplace or public AC charger when you're away from home.

Your vehicle and charge point determine the actual charging rate automatically - the 22kW figure is the maximum capability of the cable, not the power it will always deliver.

Is a 5m Type 2 cable long enough for home and public charging?

For many drivers, 5 metres is the all-rounder EV cable length.

It's long enough for typical home driveways, garages and many workplace or public charging bays, while remaining easier to handle, coil and carry than longer three-phase cables.

That's particularly relevant with a 22kW cable because a three-phase cable contains additional conductors and is therefore naturally bulkier than an equivalent single-phase cable.

If the charge point is normally reasonably close to your vehicle, 5m offers a useful balance between reach and manageability. If you frequently encounter awkward parking positions or offset charge points, consider 7.5m or 10m instead.

Will a 22kW charging cable work with an 11kW electric car?

Yes. A 22kW Type 2 cable is fully compatible with an EV that has an 11kW onboard AC charger.

Your car will simply draw its maximum supported rate - in this case up to 11kW when connected to a suitable three-phase charge point.

The same principle applies to an EV limited to 7kW AC: the cable still works, but the vehicle charges at its own maximum rate.

Choosing a 32A 22kW three-phase cable therefore gives you flexibility across different vehicles and charge points without forcing higher power into the car. This cable is universally compatible with Type 2 EVs and PHEVs under IEC 62196.
