• Output (Vehicle Side): Type 2 (IEC 62196) – compatible with the vast majority of Type 2 EVs and PHEVs

• Maximum Rating: 32A single-phase AC (a 3-phase option is not possible under the J1772 standard)

Unlike basic adapters, this Type 1 to Type 2 adapter incorporates an internal thermal protection system designed to help protect both the adapter and your charging equipment in the unlikely event of excessive temperatures.

The adapter continuously monitors its internal temperature. If the sensor reaches approximately 90°C, the Control Pilot (CP) circuit is opened, signalling the charging system to safely stop charging. Once the adapter has cooled to approximately 70°C, the CP circuit is restored, allowing charging to resume.

This protection is intended purely as a fail-safe safety feature and is not expected to operate during normal charging. Should the thermal protection ever activate, it is advisable to inspect the charging equipment and connections, as excessive heat is often associated with poor electrical contact or another underlying issue.

Charging in Wet Weather

This adapter is designed for everyday outdoor EV charging and can be used in light rain as part of normal operation.

During heavy or prolonged rain, we recommend taking simple precautions to help reduce direct water exposure at the connection point. This can be achieved by:

• Charging under cover where possible (for example, a carport or garage), or

• Using a charging plug cover during poor weather conditions

Charging plug covers are widely available in two common formats:

• Magnetic covers that attach to the vehicle body around the charge port

• Sock-style covers that fully envelope the connected charging plugs

These accessories are not currently sold in our store, but a quick online search for “EV charging plug cover” will return suitable options.

As with all EV charging equipment, if the connector becomes wet during use, allow it to fully dry before the next charging session.

Yes - this is exactly what this adapter is designed to do.

It allows a Type 1 (SAE J1772) charging plug to connect to a vehicle fitted with a Type 2 (IEC 62196-2) charging inlet.

Simply connect your existing Type 1 charging plug to the adapter, then connect the Type 2 end of the adapter to your vehicle. No rewiring or modification of your existing charging equipment is required.

This makes it particularly useful if you've changed from an older Type 1 EV to a newer Type 2 vehicle, but still have a working Type 1 home charger or charging cable that you want to continue using.

Important: this adapter works Type 1 charger/cable → Type 2 vehicle only. It does not convert a Type 2 charging cable for use with a Type 1 vehicle.

The adapter supports both 16A and 32A single-phase AC charging, up to 7.6kW.

Your actual charging speed is determined by the available power from your charger and the AC charging capability of your vehicle.

Because the Type 1/J1772 connection is single-phase, this adapter cannot convert the supply into three-phase charging. It therefore cannot provide 11kW or 22kW three-phase charging, even if your Type 2 vehicle supports those speeds from a suitable three-phase charger.
